This semester I learned all about putting my voice into writing. Previously, I have only ever written essays about other readings or strict topics. I have never had to think about or learn how to balance my voice with the evidence from texts. It was a challenge at first, I felt like my writing was very evidence heavy at the beginning because it felt more educational than personal. Throughout the semester and writing essays it really made me open up my mind and think about my own life which we have not done in high school. I remember when I was sitting at my computer my senior year, questioning how I would ever write a personal essay if I have never written from my own perspective before. It was the biggest challenge of all four years, and the one thing I didn’t learn. I hated writing until now. This class has taught me how to add my own voice into texts and use sources to support it. In my first essay, my paragraphs are super source heavy and under developed. I was sure how to make the connection between my life and the text.

Example of an underdeveloped source heavy paragraph from my first essay “Redefining Empathy”

This paragraph feels very weak, and there is no clear stance stating how I feel. from the first essay to the second, I started highlighting each of my sources in a different color. Leaving my voice unhighlighted. This was increbibly helpful because it helped me se the balance of they say to I say.

Using this technique makes my evidence clear, this helps me make smother transitions and figure out where to best put my evidence. Also how to support it with my voice.
